Solingen is not a brand, but a designation of origin
Many people assume that Solingen is a brand of knives, scissors or shaving tools. In fact, it is a German city in North Rhine-Westphalia that has been closely associated with the manufacture of cutting goods for centuries.
The name Solingen is specially protected in Germany. For cutting goods, it cannot be used freely: the product must be processed and finished in all essential manufacturing stages within the Solingen industrial area and must meet the relevant requirements for materials and workmanship.

Which products can carry the Solingen designation?
It is not limited to kitchen knives. The rules also cover scissors, straight razors and shaving equipment, hair clippers, nail files, nail nippers, nail clippers, tweezers and other cutting goods.
Solingen itself is not the manufacturer
Many independent manufacturers operate in and around Solingen. Well-known traditional brands include DOVO and MERKUR. The Solingen name therefore primarily tells you something about origin, not that every product comes from one company.
When choosing a product, look not only at the Solingen designation but also at the manufacturer, materials, workmanship and intended use.
