How to Choose a Hair Clipper for Home Haircuts

...and not make a mistake, or rather, we don't want to get annoyed with a clipper that doesn't cut...

At the start, we need to decide whether we want a clipper that runs on "battery" or on "cord" (more technically, "cordless" or "corded").

Each has its pros and cons.

A cordless clipper is lighter, usually about half the weight of a corded one. The cord doesn't get in your way, and when it's charged, you can take it to the garden, on trips, anywhere.

But the battery also has its downsides. We know this from phones, where the battery lasts a week at first, but after two years of use, only two days. It also depends on how you care for the clipper, how regularly you oil the blade head. Because if you don't, there will be more friction between the blades, which naturally puts more strain on the motor and the battery.

A cordless clipper is also roughly twice as expensive as a corded one. You pay for the freedom of movement.

If you're asking whether it's worth buying a cordless clipper for home use, the answer is yes, and I'll explain why. Besides the aforementioned freedom of movement and weight – they are light – they also have fast charging. That means the charging time is about the same as the running time. And you probably won't cut for an hour straight; you'll use it with breaks, say fifteen minutes, so if it was charged for 60 minutes of operation, you'll still have 45 minutes left for next time. That's why you don't need to worry about charging too often. For instance, I've had a cordless clipper for a while (a month or a month and a half), the WAHL Cordless Magic Clip Metal Edition, which I use for my beard. I trim once a week and haven't charged it yet. And if the clipper runs out mid-cut, you can plug it into the adapter for a while and use it like a corded one. But here we must be careful: some models have a weaker cord connector for charging, so you shouldn't twist it too much to avoid breaking the wires, which could cause poor contact and the charger might stop working.

A corded clipper is usually heavier than a cordless one and vibrates a bit more. It has a cord, but it's long, so you don't have to worry about it not reaching; the usual length is 2.4 meters. It's cheaper and less demanding to maintain. It's easy to adjust and there's not much that can break.

Now the choice is down to personal preference. I, for example, prefer convenience, so I got a cordless clipper.
